About light it can be said that it is mysterious,
marvelous, and paradoxical. It appears accompanied
by its own counter-life, its own opposite,
its own dark side: the shadow.
Together or at odds,
the luminous and the obscure create
contrasts, oppositions, dependencies, associations,
contradictions, complexities, and abstractions.
Each reveals or covers over what the other
seeks to hide or make visible.
Symbolically and metaphorically,
light and shadow reflect the clarity of memory
and the obscurity of forgetfulness,
as well as
the presence and absence,
the possession and the loss,
the seen and the unseen
inherent in the photograph.
